In the Doubs valley, some ten kilometres from Besançon, the château de Vaire displays its early 18th century classical architecture facing a French formal garden laid out over three terraces. The house was built between 1713 and 1718 for the Boisot family, following the model of Parisian residences of the period, then remodelled in the mid 18th century by the architect Claude-Antoine Colombot. Visitors can see a main building with a central projecting bay, panelled rooms, and flowerbeds, lawns and pools that form one of the earliest formal gardens in Franche-Comté.
