The château de Plieux, in the Gers department, is one of the best preserved examples of a 14th century Gascon castle. Built around 1340 by the Faudoas family on the site of an earlier stronghold, it combines a rectangular main building with two square towers, including the 26 metre Sainte-Mère tower. Machicolations still visible on three sides reflect a defensive design that long kept the building largely closed to the outside, before larger windows were added during the Renaissance. The castle is now home to writer Renaud Camus and hosts contemporary art exhibitions.
