Perched on a promontory 300 metres above the Truyère valley, the ruins of the château de Valon overlook the village of Lacroix-Barrez in the Aveyron department. The site, thought to date back to the 11th century, reached its architectural peak at the end of the 14th century with the construction of the keep and its chapel. Eight centuries of successive noble families, including the Peyre, Rolland and Fontanges lines, are still traceable in the remains of the keep, its corner turrets and its enclosure walls. The site also carries the memory of the Hundred Years' War, when the English captain Aymerigot Marchès used it to plunder and extort ransom from the surrounding region.
