To make a day of it

Château de Castel Noël stands in Brommat (Aveyron), in the Occitanie region of France. No visits are on record for this building.

Set on a basalt outcrop above the Siniq valley, Castel Noël castle stands with its round keep at the hamlet of Cussac, in the commune of Brommat, in northern Aveyron. The building combines a medieval keep built directly on the rock with an enclosure that still holds living quarters altered over time. A vaulted gateway survives whose lower section, older than the rest, is thought to date from the late 13th or early 14th century. First recorded in writing at the start of the 11th century under the name Calhac, the site is tied to the old history of the Carladès territory.

What to know

  • The castle stands on a rocky height, so reaching it involves a walk uphill.
  • No verified information is available on opening hours or admission fees.
  • The keep was partly destroyed in the 19th century, which affects its state of preservation.
  • The current entrance to the enclosure leads through the former kitchens of the living quarters, rather than directly into the courtyard as it did before the 1970s.
