In Villamblard, in the Dordogne, the ruins of the Château de Barrière stand on a site occupied since the early Middle Ages, along what was once the road linking Bergerac to Périgueux. The 13th-century keep, surrounded by moats cut into the rock, still bears its parapet walk decorated with Renaissance shell carvings. A fire at the end of the 19th century destroyed much of the residential wing, leaving today a partly dismantled tower and scattered remains.
