Château de l'Ortenbourg stands in Scherwiller (Bas-Rhin), in the Grand Est region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 12th century, 13th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Perched on a rocky spur above Scherwiller in the Bas-Rhin, the ruins of the Ortenbourg crown a ridge shared with the neighbouring Ramstein castle. The site traces back to a lordly family settled here from the 10th century, before being largely rebuilt by Rudolf of Habsburg in the 13th century. Visitors come today for the walk through forest and vineyards, the view over the Alsace plain, and the remains of a keep that endured sieges, fires and periods of abandonment.

What to know

The castle can only be reached on foot via marked trails; there is no road access to the ruins.
A car park is located at the Hühnelmühle site, the starting point of the red-marked GR5 trail.
Another path climbs from the Taennelkreuz chapel through the vineyards, marked with blue crosses.
The walk over uneven ground requires sturdy footwear and some physical effort.
