To make a day of it

Château du Landsberg stands in Heiligenstein (Bas-Rhin), in the Grand Est region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 12th century, 13th century, 15th century). Admission is free. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Perched on a granite spur above Heiligenstein, near the Mont Sainte-Odile, the ruins of Landsberg castle reveal a twofold medieval structure: an older castle built around 1197-1200 by the knight Conrad de Vienhege, and a newer one added around 1235 to the west, separated from the first by a moat. The site belonged to a network of fortresses set up to defend the nearby abbeys of Hohenbourg, Niedermunster, Truttenhausen and Andlau. Visitors can still see a rectangular keep, round towers pierced with arrow slits, and the remains of a castle chapel with a cross-shaped opening. Every winter, a carpet of yellow winter aconite flowers, locally called Schlosselblum, spreads across the surrounding ground.
