Hohlandsbourg, Haut-Koenigsbourg, Kintzheim, then Lichtenberg, the Wasenbourg and Fleckenstein: south on Saturday, north on Sunday.

Written for weekend drivers from Freiburg, Offenburg or Karlsruhe, who cross the Rhine at Breisach or Kehl and want two days that end near the border. The route starts at Colmar. Saturday stays in the south: Hohlandsbourg above the town, then the Haut-Koenigsbourg and Kintzheim, 3 km apart. Sunday drives about 75 km north to the other end of the Vosges and finishes at Fleckenstein, a few kilometres from the German border and under an hour from Karlsruhe by way of Wissembourg. Three castles a day, and walking at most of them: the Wasenbourg and the Ortenbourg are ruins reached on foot. The Haut-Koenigsbourg sells timed tickets online, which matters on a summer weekend; the others sell at the gate or are free.

Hohlandsbourg is 7 km above Colmar: start there, then 22 km to the Haut-Koenigsbourg, best before the coaches arrive, and 3 km on to Kintzheim.

About 75 km north: Lichtenberg first, then the Wasenbourg, a ruin reached on foot from Niederbronn-les-Bains, and Fleckenstein last, from where the road home runs through Wissembourg to Karlsruhe.
