The site first held a Roman watchtower and a temple dedicated to Mercury, before a stone fortress rose here, traditionally linked to the stonemasons of Strasbourg Cathedral. Visitors can still make out the knights' hall, its fireplace and Gothic windows overlooking the Alsace plain. It is considered one of the best-preserved ruins of the northern Vosges.
