To make a day of it

Château du Ramstein stands in Baerenthal (Moselle), in the Grand Est region of France. Admission is free. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Perched above Baerenthal, the ruins of Ramstein stand on a rocky spur overlooking the Zinselbach valley. Built in the mid 13th century by a branch of the Windstein family, it was once one of the largest hillforts in the Northern Vosges before being destroyed in a punitive raid during the 14th century. Rock cut stairways still lead up to the summit platform, where a few building remains can be seen.

What to know

  • The site is reached on foot via a trail, forming stage 5 of the Alsace Hillforts Trail.
  • The ruins are freely accessible and visited at one's own risk, with no supervision or visitor facilities on site.
  • The terrain is steep and stones can be loose in places, so care is needed near drops and with young children.
  • Only partial remains survive, mainly staircases and fragments of the summit building.
