To make a day of it

Château du Falkenstein stands in Philippsbourg (Moselle), in the Grand Est region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

In the Vosges du Nord, overlooking the Zinsel valley, the ruins of Falkenstein castle stand on a rocky spur partly hollowed out by human hands. Founded in the 12th century by the counts of Lutzelbourg, this semi-troglodyte castle still has an entrance gate, remains of a keep, rooms cut into the rock, and a well tower that combined defence with living quarters. At the top of the 15th century residential tower, traces of an old hand basin carved with a human mask can still be seen.
