To make a day of it

Château du Hohweyersberg stands in Mouterhouse (Moselle), in the Grand Est region of France. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

On the territory of Mouterhouse, in the Moselle department, the ruins of the Hohweyersberg castle lie on top of the Grünberg hill, within the wooded range of the Northern Vosges. It was a small hunting lodge built in the 16th century by Count Jacob of Bitche-Deux-Ponts, and already in ruins by the end of that same century. What remains today is a barely visible rectangular ground plan and a few earthworks, hard to make out among the vegetation.

What to know

  • The site is reached via an unmarked path of about 2.7 km from the parking area on the Lemberg road (D36), in the Schindelthal hamlet of Mouterhouse.
  • The forest walk involves climbing up the Grünberg hill and requires some sense of orientation, as the paths are not signposted.
  • No standing structure remains: only a rectangular ground outline and a few earthworks mark where the castle once stood.
  • The area is used for forestry work and hunting, especially in autumn, so warning signs should be heeded.
  • There are no visitor facilities, opening hours or fees at this site, which can be visited freely and at one's own risk.
