To make a day of it

Château et cimetière de Châtenois stands in Châtenois (Bas-Rhin), in the Grand Est region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 13th century, 14th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

In Châtenois, in the Bas-Rhin region, a double enclosure from the 13th century remains, the trace of a castle that no longer exists and of a fortified cemetery linked to it. This site is one of the few places in Alsace where the former defensive role of a burial ground can still be read in the standing walls. The interest lies in these walls and their layout rather than in surviving buildings, since the castle itself is gone.

What to know

  • The castle itself no longer stands: only the fortified double enclosure can be seen today.
  • The site has been a listed historic monument (inscrit) since 1993.
  • The enclosure surrounds a cemetery still in use, so visitors should be mindful of this.
  • No verified information is available regarding opening hours or specific access conditions for the monument.
