In Sercy, in the Saône-et-Loire region, stands a medieval stronghold whose overall silhouette has survived the centuries largely intact. Built in the 12th century and reinforced after the Hundred Years' War, the structure forms an irregular quadrangle of varied towers around an inner courtyard, including the Hourd tower, topped with an open timber structure resting on stone corbels, among the oldest such arrangements known in France. A Romanesque chapel remains within the walls, along with a gatehouse tower once defended by machicolations recalling those of the Papal Palace in Avignon. The site remains privately owned and open to visitors.
