Château de Busséol stands in Busséol (Puy-de-Dôme), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 12th century). Adult admission costs 9 EUR. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Standing on a volcanic dyke at nearly 700 metres above sea level, Busséol castle overlooks the Limagne plain and dates back to the 12th century. Rebuilt in 1170 by Guillaume VIII, count of Auvergne, on the remains of a Gallo-Roman castrum, it retains a defensive character that is unusual for buildings of this period, including a keep and a crenellated tower. The stronghold withstood sieges and wars over the centuries and passed through the hands of notable owners, among them Catherine de Medici, before falling into ruin after the Revolution and being restored from 1966 onwards. A Romanesque chapel still stands at the foot of the residence.
