To make a day of it

Château des Martinanches stands in Saint-Dier-d'Auvergne (Puy-de-Dôme), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 11th century, 15th century, 16th century, 18th century). Adult admission costs 7 EUR. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Château des Martinanches stands a few kilometres from the village of Saint-Dier-d'Auvergne, on the line of an old Roman road that once linked Clermont-Ferrand to Le Puy-en-Velay. Built in the 11th century by the Comptour d'Apchon family, it keeps the layout of a fortified stronghold: a rectangular main building with corner towers, surrounded by wide moats crossed by two bridges. The polygonal stair turret projecting from the east front, along with interiors reworked in the 16th and 18th centuries, reflect the shift from a military outpost to a residence.
