Château de Mauzun stands in Mauzun (Puy-de-Dôme), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: first half of the 13th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

On an extinct volcano overlooking the village of Mauzun, in the Puy-de-Dôme, stand the remains of a fortress built in the 13th century by the bishops of Clermont. The scale is striking: three concentric lines of walls, around fifteen round towers and a square keep flanked by four massive towers, all built from the volcano's own black stone. It is a site of open-air ruins, shaped by centuries of sieges, dismantling and repeated rescue efforts.

What to know

The site has not been open to visitors since tours were suspended during the 2019-2020 health crisis.
The castle has been listed as a historic monument since 1970, with an additional protection added in 2013 covering the barbican.
Visiting, when possible, involves climbing to the top of a former volcano over uneven ground.
The whole site covers about five hectares, making it an extensive ruin to walk through.
