To make a day of it

Château de Chalencon stands in Saint-André-de-Chalencon (Haute-Loire), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 12th century, 13th century). Adult admission costs 3.5 EUR. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Perched on a rocky outcrop above the Ance valley, Chalencon castle overlooks the hamlet of the same name and preserves the ruins of a medieval fortress, cradle of one of the great families of the Velay region. Visitors find three successive terraces, a circular keep still standing, and two corner turrets partly rebuilt in the early 20th century. A few surviving windows date from the late 13th century, evidence of the last building phase before the site was abandoned around 1600.
