Standing on a height in the Quercorb area of the Aude Pyrenees, Puivert castle spreads out a large rectangular parade ground ringed by walls and towers, dominated by a square keep dating from the late 13th century. Visitors come for the sheer scale of the keep, still covered by its four-storey vaults, and for the fortified layout that remains readable from the eastern gate to the western tip, despite the ruined seigneurial lodging. The site is tied to an episode of the Albigensian Crusade, the castle having been taken by Simon de Montfort's forces in the early 13th century.
