What the French Ministry of Culture records

Léran fut, à l'origine, une forteresse bâtie au 13e siècle, composée de trois tours épousant les irrégularités du sol. Ce fut un poste de défense placé à proximité du château de Montségur, dernier réduit de l'armée albigeoise. Son histoire est liée aux luttes de la croisade des Albigeois, dont le seigneur de Levis fut l'un des vainqueurs. Il devint la résidence d'une branche cadette de cette famille et ne participa plus qu'à des conflits locaux. De l'ancien château, les maçonneries existent encore, en grande partie englobées et refondues dans des constructions postérieures s'étendant du 15e au 19e siècle. Les fantaisies médiévales ajoutées au 19e siècle étouffent l'authenticité de la construction. Un escalier du 17e et une tour du 14e subsistent à l'intérieur du château. Les aménagements intérieurs du 19e siècle ont détruit la plupart des aménagements antérieurs. Les murs de la chapelle ont été revêtus de boiseries Louis XV, de style italianisant, provenant du château de Lagarde, tombé en ruines à la Révolution.
