In Lagarde, in the Ariège department, the substantial ruins of a castle dating back to the 11th century stand above the valley of the Hers-Vif river, near Mirepoix. Originally built as a watchtower, the fortress was expanded over generations by the Lévis family until it grew, during the baroque period, into a large residential complex sometimes likened to the Loire valley châteaux. The French Revolution brought this grandeur to an end: looted and partly demolished, the site now survives only as ruins, though their scale still reflects the former monument's size.
