To make a day of it

Standing above the village of Fitou, this medieval castle overlooks both the Leucate lagoons and the sea. Its ruins, dating from the Middle Ages, bear witness to a long military history marked by repeated sieges and fires. Visitors can still make out the arrow-slit walls of a former vaulted hall and a round tower at the north-west corner.
