To make a day of it

Château de Périllos stands in Périllos (Pyrénées-Orientales), in the Occitanie region of France. No visits are on record for this building.

The ruins of the Périllos castle stand on the highest point of the abandoned village of Périllos, in the commune of Opoul-Périllos, next to the Saint-Michel church. This medieval castle, dating from the 12th-13th centuries, now consists of a partly collapsed square tower and the remains of a fortified enclosure. It is an isolated site, with uneven terrain, that has kept the character of a former border outpost between Catalonia and the kingdom of France.

What to know

  • The site lies within the abandoned village of Périllos, reachable only on foot over rough terrain.
  • There are no opening hours or ticketing: the ruins are freely accessible, with no visitor facilities.
  • The remains are limited to a partly collapsed square tower and the foundations of an enclosure, so the visit relies on imagination rather than amenities.
  • As the site is remote and offers no shade, sturdy footwear and avoiding the hottest hours are advisable.
  • No information is available on accessibility for visitors with reduced mobility, given the naturally rough ground.
