The Château de la Mothe stands in Vicq, in the Allier department, on the site of a former earthwork castle whose stone construction was completed around 1500 by Louis d'Arçon de Chauvigny. Surrounded by water-filled moats, it is recognisable by its square entrance tower preceded by a stone bridge and by the timber gallery with moulded posts running around the inner courtyard, a now rare feature. The keep, which lost two storeys during the Revolution, still bears traces of successive alterations from the 15th to the 18th century. The château is now privately owned and used for events; it is no longer open to visitors.
