What the French Ministry of Culture records
La seigneurie du Max, dépendant des ducs de Bourbon, apparaît au XIIIe siècle. A la fin du XVe siècle et au début du XVIe siècle, le fief est détenu par les frères Rolland qui doivent le céder à Jacques de Gouzolles en 1528. Héritier de Jacques de Gouzolles disparu mystérieusement, son neveu fait élever une chapelle à sa mémoire en face du château. Celui-ci est acheté en1663, par Georges Gaulmin de Montgeorges, magistrat fin lettré et fidèle de Mazarin.
