In the Grésivaudan valley, between Grenoble and Chambéry, the château du Touvet stands on a site that once marked the border between Dauphiné and Savoy. Built in the 13th century by the d'Entremont family, it was turned into a pleasure residence in the 18th century by Count Pierre de Marcieu, who added an Italian-style water staircase, cascades and formal terraces. The same family has lived there for more than five hundred years, and one room still holds Cordoba leather wall decoration. The gardens, listed among France's remarkable gardens, are open to visitors alongside the château.
