Set on a hillside overlooking the Virieu valley and the Bourbre river, this castle began as an 11th century earthen motte and still retains its enclosed inner courtyard, pepper pot towers and battlemented walkway. Inside are a 17th century chapel, the so called King's Room with its canopied bed, and the mountain cannons left behind by Louis XIII in 1622. A terraced French style garden, restored to its original layout, adds an enclosed kitchen garden and box hedge parterres to the visit.
