The château de Clermont stands in Saint-Geoire-en-Valdaine, on the site of the oldest of the seven châteaux found in this commune. It takes its name from the House of Clermont-Tonnerre, a noble family from the Dauphiné who turned it into a refined residence in the 15th century, before it was destroyed during the Wars of Religion. What visitors see today dates from the mid-19th century: a neo-Renaissance reconstruction commissioned by the Marquise de Tourzel, the last governess of the children of Louis XVI.
