The château of Châlus Maulmont stands in ruins on a hill in the commune of Châlus, facing the château of Châlus-Chabrol across the Tardoire valley. Built between 1275 and 1280 by Géraud de Maulmont, advisor to the viscountess of Limoges, it was originally a fortified residence flanked by two towers, one of which rose to 33 metres. Long mistakenly linked to the death of Richard the Lionheart, it still shows a south facade with a twin-bayed window topped by a rose window, remnants of the lord's living quarters. The second tower collapsed in 1994, and the site today remains a protected ruin.
