In Bridoré, in the Indre-et-Loire, stands a fortress built in the 14th and 15th centuries for the Boucicaut family and later raised higher under Imbert de Batarnay, advisor to the kings of France. The keep, some thirty metres tall, overlooks a defensive system of pentagonal caponiers said to be unique in France. The site was never besieged and has remained in the same family, who still live there and look after its upkeep. Visitors can also see the remains of a medieval bathhouse and a chapel that has lost its vault.
