To make a day of it

Château de Loches stands in Loches (Indre-et-Loire), in the Centre-Val de Loire region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: first half of the 11th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Perched on a rocky spur above the Indre valley, Loches castle brings together an 11th century keep, a royal lodge and a collegiate church within a fortified town. The keep, among the oldest surviving stone military structures in France, was built by Fulk Nerra, count of Anjou, and later served as a state prison until the early 20th century. Visitors come for the medieval defensive architecture as much as for the site's history, shaped by the struggle between the Plantagenets and the Capetians and by the presence of Charles VII and Joan of Arc.
