The castles of Joan of Arc
10 châteaux listed
10 places where Joan of Arc lodged, fought or was held captive, from the Loire to Rouen.
Before Charles VII received her at Chinon, Joan of Arc lodged at the château of Coudray-Montpensier, a few kilometres away, waiting for her audience with the king. In 1429 she came to the nearby Rivau for warhorses. Loches, too, remembers the passage of Charles VII and Joan of Arc.
On 14 June 1429 Meung-sur-Loire, turned into a fortress during the Hundred Years’ War, was freed by Joan of Arc. On 18 June her troops drove the English out of Huisseau-sur-Mauves. Sully-sur-Loire, further upstream, also saw her pass.
Captured in 1430, she was held for four months in the keep of Beaurevoir, in the Aisne, before being handed over to the English, and held the same year at Saint-Riquier, in the Somme. In Rouen she was locked in a tower of Philip Augustus’s castle, of which only the foundations remain; in 1431, during her trial, she was threatened with torture in the keep, the only part of the castle still standing.
Each link comes from the French Ministry of Culture’s Mérimée records or from our own château pages. Visits that local tradition credits her with, without further evidence, are left out.
