The castles of Anne of Brittany
8 châteaux listed
8 places where Duchess Anne married, stayed or died, with admission prices and opening seasons.
In Nantes, the castle of the Dukes of Brittany is the 15th-century ducal residence that became a royal fortress once the duchy joined France. The union of Brittany with the kingdom was sealed there in 1532.
The attachment had been sealed by a marriage at the château of Langeais in Touraine, where Anne of Brittany married Charles VIII in 1491. Two years later, in 1493, the couple stayed at Courcelles-le-Roi in the Loiret. In 1495 the queen stayed at Segange in the Allier. At Romorantin she was received by Louise of Savoy, mother of the future Francis I.
She died at the château of Blois, the favourite royal residence of the Renaissance. In Brittany, one of the medieval towers of Brest castle bears her name, and the château of Kéralio at Plouguiel was built for one of her officers and fortified with ducal permission from 1497.
Each link comes from the French Ministry of Culture’s Mérimée records or from our own château pages. For every place: what ties it to her, the adult admission price where we know it, and the opening season.
