Le château de Brest est un édifice composite, comme tous les ouvrages militaires obligés de s'adapter constamment aux progrès de l'art de la guerre. Reconstruit sur l'emplacement d'une ancienne forteresse gallo-romaine, le chateau actuel est principalement le résultat de deux époques de construction : le 15e et le 17e siècles. Ainsi le donjon, qui, défendu par le bastion de Sourdéac, domine le port, comprend deux tours médiévales, baptisées grosse tour et tour de la Duchesse Anne, englobée dans une extension construite par Vauban.
