Standing on the banks of the Loire, this fortified castle begun in 1395 still shows its medieval keep surrounded by moats fed by the Sange river. Guy VI de la Trémoïlle first raised the building, but it was Maximilien de Béthune, duke of Sully and chief minister to Henri IV, who reshaped the estate in the early 17th century, adding an artillery tower and galleries linking the various wings. Visitors follow a route through nineteen rooms that trace six centuries of history, including a visit by Joan of Arc, a stay by Louis XIV and Voltaire's period of exile there.
