Les trois grosses tours remontent au Moyen-Age. Le château se transforme à la Renaissance : des appartements remplacent les chemins de ronde entre les tours. L'aspect général de l'édifice se maintient jusqu'en 1740, date de nombreux aménagements de confort. De 1880 à la première gerre mondiale, des travaux confèrent au château sont aspect actuel, dans un goût marqué pour les châteaux de Louis II de Bavière, avec création de tourelles, d'une galerie à colombage et remaniement intérieur.
