To make a day of it

Château de Faverges stands in Faverges-Seythenex (Haute-Savoie), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 13th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

On a spur overlooking the town of Faverges, in Haute-Savoie, stands a 13th-century keep, the remnant of a fortified castle that once guarded the border between the counties of Savoy and Geneva. Altered in the 15th century and later turned for over a century into a silk-weaving works, the building has kept its 32-metre keep, now fitted with an internal staircase and a wooden panoramic gallery. Visitors mainly come for the 360-degree view and for this example of Savoyard castle architecture.

What to know

  • Only the keep, the courtyard floor and the south and south-west retaining walls are listed as historic monuments.
  • Reaching the top of the keep involves climbing an internal staircase of 144 steps, so some physical effort is required.
  • Since 2017 the site has been run by new operators who also host private and professional events there.
  • Kestrel nests and swift nesting boxes are preserved beneath the keep's wooden gallery.
