To make a day of it

Domaine des châteaux d'Allinges stands in Allinges (Haute-Savoie), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument. Admission is free. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

On the hill of Allinges, two rival fortresses stand in ruins facing each other: Château-Vieux and Château-Neuf. The latter still holds a Romanesque chapel dating from the 11th century, listed as a historic monument, with a notable fresco in its apse. The site once served as the residence of Saint Francis de Sales during his mission to evangelise the Chablais region, between 1594 and 1598. From the summit, at 717 metres, the view stretches over Lake Geneva, the Jura mountains and the Dent d'Oche peak.
