In Coye-la-Forêt, on the edge of the Chantilly forest, this small medieval building had an eventful history before becoming, in the early 19th century, one of the earliest examples of the neo-Gothic revival in France. Once converted into a mill known as the loge de Viarmes, it was remodelled in 1825 and 1826 at the request of the Duke of Bourbon, who turned it into a romantic composition of architecture and sculpture. Its picturesque silhouette, perched above the water, made it a favourite subject for painters and engravers of the 19th century.
