What the French Ministry of Culture records

Ce petit édifice d'époque médiévale fut transformé en moulin, connu sous le nom de loge de Viarmes. En 1825 et 1826, il fut transformé dans le goût néogothique alors naissant, à la demande du Duc de Bourbon. Les travaux furent confiés à l'architecte Victor Dubois, et les sculptures furent réalisées par Boichard et Thierry. Cet édifice constitue un témoignage particulièrement précoce du goût néogothique qui accompagna la redécouverte de l'art médiéval au début du 19e siècle. L'abondante iconographie romantique à son sujet en a fait un des archétypes du genre.
