Built in the 11th and 12th centuries, the fortress was reworked in the 15th century to withstand gunfire before being dismantled in 1766. Visitors can still see a barbican and a rare defensive feature known as a moineau, built into the base of the keep. The historian Jules Michelet said he found his calling here, calling the ruins a 'feudal Colosseum'.
