Château de Lafauche stands in Lafauche (Haute-Marne), in the Grand Est region of France. On a hilltop in the Haute-Marne, some forty kilometres from Chaumont, the ruins of the Lafauche castle mark the site of a border stronghold once contested between the kingdom of France and the duchies of Bar and Lorraine. An earlier eleventh-century building was replaced at the end of the fifteenth century by a fortress designed to withstand artillery, built by Jean de Baudricourt, later Marshal of France. What remains still shows the scale of the place: the Griffons gate, the keep, round towers, the Saint-André chapel and outlying defences visible on the neighbouring Châtelot hill.
