Built in 1599 on the foundations of a 15th-century noble house, it retains the character of a fortified residence, later reworked in a more genteel spirit in the late 18th century. The addition of an extra storey and two pavilions under the Comte de Beaujeu gave the building its present outline, combining defensive austerity with a later taste for comfort.
