To make a day of it

Château de Morteau stands in Cirey-lès-Mareilles (Haute-Marne), in the Grand Est region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: fourth quarter of the 16th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

In the village of Cirey-lès-Mareilles, in the Haute-Marne department, the château de Morteau takes the form of a square building flanked by four bastion-shaped towers, completed in 1599 for Nicolas de Haut on his return from a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. Inside, two distinct periods remain visible: the vaulted 16th century ground floor, with its great hall and a chapel decorated with murals from the 1640s, and the upper floor reworked in the late 18th century under the Comte de Beaujeu, with its panelling, flooring and fireplaces from that time. A 18th century dovecote, with its nesting holes and rotating ladder, stands nearby and is part of the protected ensemble.
