To make a day of it

Château du Pailly stands in Le Pailly (Haute-Marne), in the Grand Est region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: second half of the 16th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

In Le Pailly, in the Haute-Marne, stands one of the most accomplished Renaissance ensembles in the region, built in the 1560s for Gaspard de Saulx-Tavannes, Marshal of France. The courtyard, with its grand staircase featuring superimposed Ionic columns, reflects the architectural refinement sought by this companion-in-arms of François I. A medieval keep, remnant of the earlier fortified castle, still rises amid the water-filled moats. The park retains a lime-tree walk and a French formal garden reworked around the turn of the twentieth century.
