Château-bas de Sedan stands in Sedan (Ardennes), in the Grand Est region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 16th century, 17th century). Adult admission costs 12 EUR. Its opening hours and prices were verified at the source on August 9, 2026.
Set slightly below the fortified castle of Sedan, the château-bas, also known as the Palais des Princes, shows two very different faces: an elegant courtyard front with paired pilasters and dormer windows crowned by pediments, and a plainer street-facing wall pierced by a large gateway reminiscent of a town gate. Built in the early 17th century for the Duke of Bouillon, it reflects the shift from Renaissance to classical architecture in princely residences. In the vaulted basement, a carved wooden-baluster staircase and a stone fireplace remain as the only traces of the original interior decor, which did not survive the building's later use as a barracks.

Frequently asked

- The courtyard façade is decorated in the refined style of its time, while the street façade, plainer and pierced by a large gateway, was meant to fit the defensive character of the whole castle.
