To make a day of it

Château de Bellevue stands in Frénois (Ardennes), in the Grand Est region of France. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

On the outskirts of Sedan, the château de Bellevue owes its fame to a single day: on 2 September 1870, Napoleon III signed here the act of capitulation that ended the Franco-Prussian War. The house, built in the mid-19th century from Bulson stone and later extended with two pavilions, is architecturally modest, but its place in French military history has made it known well beyond the Ardennes. The building cannot be visited and is best seen from the Bellevue road.

What to know

  • The château is a private property and its interior is not open to the public.
  • It can only be seen from the D29 road, known as the route de Bellevue, a few kilometres from the centre of Sedan.
  • No opening hours or admission fees exist, since there is no public access to the building.
  • The site is mainly of interest for its link to the 1870 capitulation, with no visitor facilities on the grounds.
  • A visit is therefore limited to an outside stop, which fits well within a tour of the Battle of Sedan sites.
