Château de Moncade stands in Orthez (Pyrénées-Atlantiques), in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: second quarter of the 13th century, 14th century). On a hill above the Gave de Pau, the tower of Moncade stands alone over the town of Orthez, the last remaining part of a 13th-century fortress that served as residence to the viscounts of Béarn. Built on a spur with a pentagonal plan, the keep still rises some thirty metres and is surrounded by fully paved moats and the remains of several defensive walls. Gaston Fébus lived there and had the tower raised in the 14th century, before the stronghold gradually fell into decline from the 15th century onward.

This is an open-air ruin, mainly the keep and remains of fortifications, with no roof or furnished rooms.
The site sits on a hill, so access involves a sloped path, which is not well suited to visitors with reduced mobility.
Only the keep and its surrounding walls can be visited today, as the original park and fortified town have disappeared.
The visit takes place mostly outdoors, so sturdy footwear is advisable given the sloping, sometimes wet ground.
