What the French Ministry of Culture records

La vicomté de Sault était placée entre le duché de Gascogne, dont elle relevait, et la vicomté de Béarn. Anglais et Béarnais se disputèrent tout au long du 13e siècle, la suzeraineté de cette seigneurie et le contrôle de son château. Celui-ci, occupant une position stratégique, fut plusieurs fois assiégé. En 1263, le seigneur de Sault, allié de Gaston VII Moncade, fut contraint d'abattre le donjon du château de Sault. Mais, un siècle plus tard, la place constituait toujours, selon Froissard, un fort château. Il subsiste aujourd'hui de ce château, élevé sur une motte, une tour et un pan de mur
