To make a day of it

Château de Salm stands in La Broque (Bas-Rhin), in the Grand Est region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: fourth quarter of the 12th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Perched on a red sandstone ridge above the Bruche valley, the ruins of Salm castle have marked the landscape of La Broque since the late 12th century. Visitors can still make out a shield tower, a postern gate and the vaulted chamber of a cistern, remnants of a comital stronghold once counted among the finest in the Lorraine-Alsace border region. Listed as a historic monument, the site is reached after a forest climb to an altitude of 809 metres.

What to know

  • The site is reached via an uphill forest path, with no facilities for reduced mobility.
  • These are open-air ruins, with no roofed building or furnished interior to see.
  • There are no set opening hours or fees, as access to the site is free.
  • Sturdy shoes are recommended, since the ground is uneven and can be slippery.
  • The remains, though partly cleared by restoration work, are fragmentary and require some imagination to picture the original layout.
