The ruined castle of Schirmeck stands on a wooded height overlooking the Bruche valley in the Bas-Rhin region. Built in the early 13th century, it was destroyed by Swedish troops in 1633 during the Thirty Years' War and never rebuilt; over the following centuries its stones were reused to build a church steeple and village houses. What remains today, partly restored by the town in 1969, can be freely explored from the outside and offers an open view over the surrounding countryside.
